Analysis of Major Characters

First and foremost we will start off with the main character, then I'm just going in order of introduction in the book:

Oedipa Mass: Oedipa is the main character of this novel and the story is told from her point of view. She is married, has a dead ex boyfriend, and has an affair throughout the book. According to her ex boyfriend, she is an "easy lay". She does not seem to have any qualms about cheating on her husband, and although it is not explicitly said in the book I feel they may have an open relationship. Even while reading the book I do not feel too much of a connection to Oedipa. I feel that the author does this on purpose, as there is alot of mystery surrounding the book and main plotline I feel that he wants mystery surrounding the main character. She is definitely not your typical heroine. She doesn't display any remarkable or redeemable(sp?) qualities, but is still likeable enough for a main character. She is constantly trying to draw a line between the true and untrue.

Mucho Mass: Seriously? Who names a character that? Anyways. Mucho is Oedipa's husband. He used to be a used car salesman but is now a radio Dee-Jay. He takes his appearance very seriously and is also very sensitive despite his big appearance. Oedipa mentions in the beginning how sensitive he used to be about his salesmanship and the quality of his work. It is hinted through the book that Mucho has a liking for younger women (maybe under the age of 18) and Oedipa finds it a little weird.

Pierce Inverarity: This is Oedipa's ex-boyfriend who is now dead. The book is centered around her excecuting his will and what she discovers around it. We do not know much about him except that he was very very rich and owned many companies secretive and openly. Throughout the book Oedipa wonders if all of the weird things she is experiencing are just him playing tricks and getting back at her.

Metzger: He is a lawyer who is supposed to help Oedipa with the execution of  the will. They end up having an affair at the beginning of the book.  He used to be a child actor  who went under the stage name of "Baby Igor". He does not seem to have any great qualities either, Oedipa describes him as somewhat overweight and he gets very drunk and passes out after they have their affair.

The Paranoids: This is a boy band first introduced to us when Oedipa visits Metzgers house. They are an allusion to the beatles, a pretty obvious one and even have a song entitled "I Want to Kiss Your Feet" (aka I Want to Hold Your Hand). They have long obnoxious hair, and are pretty preppy. At one point one of the member's girlfriends has to take over driving because his hair impares his vision. They do alot of drugs it seems like, and dont really fear getting caught. They are really carefree and don't further the plot of the book but are prevalent in the beginning.

More to come?
